IMPACT Program
You bring the potential. We’ll help you reach it.
The health care workforce shortage continues.
We have the solution.
Omaha is facing a critical healthcare workforce shortage, particularly in nursing. And it is predicted to only get worse. This drastically affects Nebraskans who are in need of reliable health care. While the numbers look bleak, this provides an opportunity for individuals in need of stable work and are motivated to pursue a meaningful career. It is estimated that 10.4% of Nebraska’s population lives below the poverty line and the leading causes of poverty are lack of education and barriers to employment.
To address these issues, in 2019 QLI successfully implemented the IMPACT program to provide effective training while seeking to overcome barriers to employment and support meaningful career growth.
About the Program
IMPACT stands for Integrative Mentoring, Positive and Collaborative Training. The IMPACT is designed to provide individualized training and mentoring for students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in working in the health care field. The program assists students in securing their Certified Nursing Assistant training, Dining Assistant training, or summer internships while training them to be effective members of the health care system. The program is held on QLI’s campus where participants receive real-world training and are surrounded by experienced health care professionals who are invested in their success.
Although geared towards high school students obtaining their nurse aide certification, the program serves individuals of all ages, from all socioeconomic or English secondary language backgrounds.
Clinical Skill Training
Students learn the essential skills to providing physical and emotional care for those who need it. The 90-hour course is just the first step. Participants must also demonstrate competency in all fields. IMPACT team members stand alongside the students every step of the way, providing extra support as needed.
Real World Application
Classroom training is important in learning fundamental skills but real-world application is what truly determines retention and generalization of those skills. Each student receives an average of 30 hours of practical experience under the guidance of a mentor giving ample opportunity to hone the skills needed to properly care for their patients. Summer internships offer around 440 hours of application.
Mentoring
Having a successful career involves more than just the technical skills. Team members must understand soft skills such as being a good team member, the ability to manage and problem solve work/life conflicts, and strong interpersonal skills. These skill sets are best learned through real-life scenarios with seasoned mentors to provide guidance and support.
We Know Learning
For over 35 years, QLI has been a national leader in brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation. We employ cutting-edge learning strategies to facilitate the brain’s capacity to change and improve given the right support and repetition in a real-world, meaningful environment. These same techniques are the same that facilitate the acquisition of new skills for individuals with little to no experience or training in a given task.
We Can Help You Succeed
Upon completing certification, each student is offered an internship at QLI, followed by a part-time or full-time employment, or assistance in securing a position at another health care facility. For students interested in furthering their nursing education, support is provided to help them access higher education programs.
